The Story of Hind Rajab

If you haven’t heard the name Hind Rajab, you will. She was six years old. In early 2024, her family’s car came under fire in Gaza City. Everyone inside was killed except Hind and her teenage cousin, Layan. The world literally heard them begging for help on a phone call with dispatchers.

For hours, a six-year-old sat trapped among the bodies of her family, waiting for a rescue that was actively targeted and destroyed. The Red Crescent sent an ambulance to save her, but Israeli forces bombed it upon arrival, killing the paramedics Yusuf Zeino and Ahmed al-Madhoun. Then, they killed Hind.

The new film “The Voice of Hind Rajab” by Oscar-nominee Kaouther Ben Hania forces us to listen to those real audio recordings. It is the sound of a life being extinguished while the help sent to save her was blown to pieces.

It Didn’t Start (or End) With Hind

The hardest truth to swallow is that Hind is not just a one-off tragedy. She is part of a list that grows daily—in Gaza and the West Bank.

We need to say their names, because they are not just numbers:

  • Adam al-Ghoul (8 years old): Shot dead in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank. Footage showed him running away when he was struck. He wasn’t a combatant; he was a terrified kid.
  • Basil Abu al-Wafa (15 years old): Killed in the same military raid as Adam.
  • Omar Awadin (14 years old): Shot in the back by undercover Israeli forces while riding his bike outside his parents’ shop in Jenin.
  • Fares Odeh: We can’t forget the image from 2000 of a boy throwing a stone at a tank. He was killed shortly after. He was a child facing military hardware.

This is not “collateral damage.” When you have snipers shooting children in the head and chest (as documented by international surgeons who have volunteered in Gaza), it is a feature of the system, not a bug.

Abducted and Erased: Children in Prison

It gets darker. There is a systemic pipeline where children are taken from their homes—often in night raids—and thrown into military detention.

We are witnessing children dying in custody.

Walid Khaled Ahmed was just 17. He was being held in administrative detention (imprisoned without charge or trial) in Megiddo prison. He didn’t die from a firefight. Reports indicate he died due to medical neglect and starvation policies implemented by extreme right-wing ministers.

He was a child, locked in a cage, who died alone. This is what it means when people say the system is designed to break them young.

“We Don’t Grow Up Here”

This systematic erasure is why Jackie Chan broke down in a recent clip. He was watching a Palestinian boy explain, “We don’t grow up in Palestine. We get killed before we grow up.”

That quote cuts through the politics. It reveals the core truth: They want to plan for graduation, but they aren’t allowed to. They are forced to plan for their own funerals instead.

Silencing the Defenders

So, who speaks for them? Defense for Children International – Palestine (DCIP) has spent years documenting these exact crimes. They are the ones telling us about Walid, Adam, and Hind.

And how were they rewarded? Israel designated DCIP a “terrorist organization.” When you label the people holding the magnifying glass as terrorists, you are trying to smash the magnifying glass so the world can’t see the evidence.

The Takeaway

“The Voice of Hind Rajab” is difficult to watch. It should be. But we cannot look away. As professionals and human beings, we have to recognize that an entire generation is being erased.

Say their names. Watch the film. Do not let them be forgotten.
