The 2024 report from the Civil Liberties Monitoring Centre in Johannesburg reveals that 10% of global repression on freedom of expression is linked to Palestine.

Violations have occurred in occupied Palestine and against those expressing solidarity worldwide. The report notes that major wars, including Israel’s genocide in Gaza, have facilitated authoritarian policies.

It emphasizes Israel’s continued targeting of journalists, media outlets, and protests, including the closure of Al Jazeera’s office in the West Bank.

The study also highlights that the Middle East and North Africa remain home to some of the most repressive governments. Over 70% of the global population lives in restricted or closed societies.
