Defund Genocide has called on university students to demand their education institutes divest from businesses that support Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
“We are deeply concerned by the consistent reports of grave human rights violations and war crimes in Gaza by Israel over the past 12 months. A number of prominent international bodies have described Israeli actions as constituting a genocide,” Defund Genocide said in a statement today. “It is shocking that a number of universities are deeply complicit in Israeli war crimes including illegal Israeli settlements, which involve acts of violence perpetuated by extremist Israeli settlers.”
It highlighted that chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, is seeking arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Minister of Defence, Yoav Gallant, for war crimes and crimes against humanity, while the UK “government continues to sell arms to Israel.”
“Our initiative is grounded in the principles of supporting ethical resistance. By demanding that our universities divest from companies that are complicit in Israeli war crimes, we are exercising our moral and legal duty to dissent against policies that contribute to the war crimes and ‘plausible’ Genocide being committed in Gaza,” the movement explained.
“We urge our university students to demand a refund of their tuition fees until such time as our universities divest from their complicit investments in Israeli war crimes and the Genocide.”
