Israeli airstrikes targeted several areas in Syria’s capital, Damascus, early on 1 October, killing several, including a prominent Syrian journalist.
“At about 2:05 am on Tuesday morning the Israeli enemy carried out an air aggression with military aircraft and drones from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting a number of points in the city of Damascus,” a Syrian military source told SANA.
“The air defense forces responded to the aggression’s missiles and downed some of them. The aggression led to the martyrdom of three civilians, the injury of nine others, and significant damage to private property,” the source added.
Social media footage showed a vehicle engulfed in flames in the Mezzeh area, one of the locations hit in the attack. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene.
Among those killed was prominent television anchor Safaa Ahmad.
The General Authority for Radio and Television in Syria said in a statement that it “mourns anchor Safaa Ahmad who was martyred in the Israeli aggression on the capital Damascus.”
Just days ago, Israel targeted the Wadi Hanna neighborhood in the city of Qusayr in western Syria.
The attacks on Syria come as Israel is waging a massive and deadly campaign of airstrikes across Lebanon, including its capital, and is planning an imminent ground invasion of the country.
“The widespread Israeli aggression on countries and peoples of the region is pushing it to the brink of a dangerous escalation and confrontation whose consequences cannot be predicted that would cause disastrous repercussions on peace and security in the region and far beyond,” Syrian Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbagh said on 30 September at the UN General Assembly.
Sabbagh called on the international community “to put an end to the Israeli aggression on Palestine, Syria and Lebanon, and hold the occupation responsible for its crimes, and ensure that it does not escape punishment.”
