Brussels, Belgium — We congratulate the Belgian Government for its bold and principled actions in arresting and interrogating two Israeli soldiers accused of committing war crimes committed during a military operation in Gaza. This landmark move, carried out by the Belgian federal police at the Tomorrowland music festival in Boom, marks the first time European authorities have officially detained Israeli suspects linked to atrocities in Gaza.

The arrest follows an urgent legal complaint filed by the Hind Rajab Foundation (see Pic) and the Global Legal Action Network (GLAN), citing documented evidence of violations of international humanitarian law, including attacks on civilians during the early days of the 2024–2025 Gaza war. The suspect was formally detained and questioned before being released pending further investigation.

Legal Basis for Accountability

Belgium’s action is based on the principle  of universal jurisdiction, which is enshrined in Article 14/10 of its Criminal Procedure Code. This legal doctrine empowers states to prosecute individuals for serious international crimes—such as war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide—regardless of where the crime occurred or the nationality of the accused. By applying this principle, Belgium has demonstrated its commitment to upholding the Geneva Convention and the UN Convention Against Torture.

This development is not purely symbolic—it is  a legal and moral necessity. Quoting the official statement of the Hind Rajab Foundation, “Universal jurisdiction is not just an empty cry of principle—it is an obligation“.

A Call to a Global Community

We urge  all countries  to follow in Belgium’s bold footsteps. Remaining silent in the face of credible evidence means conspiring with criminal acts. The international community must overcome political inertia and act decisively to ensure that war criminals are brought to justice—regardless of rank, nationality or geopolitical affiliation.

Our call to all the victims in Gaza: we see you, we hear you, and we bear  the burden of demanding justice everywhere.

Well done for Belgium’s stance, may it be a spark that ignites a global movement for accountability, dignity and peace for the people of Gaza.
